Creative Fashion Photography By Female Model

photo studio, photography studio, fashion photography
I love to photography the original creative concept. The following photos of a girl as a model photoshoot. On a local modeling agency when I asked if they had a new face that required portfolio photos taken. This is a great way for any traveler to find a model photographer at their home or in foreign countries. This first photo is actually one frame that I took during the shooting but beautifully illustrates how unique and unexpected ideas can come. There is no way to plan for this session because until we turned and saw the construction site we do not know where we shoot. At the beginning of shooting and saw some photos in chronological order.

Most of the clothing models and fashion shoots started with fashion photography. This is especially useful when the first shots were just as with girls from European countries. Models wear clothes that show more and less skin is a good way to warm up, build chemistry, check out the best angle and does not attract too many viewers immediately.

A Fab Career In Fashion Photography

From Assistant To High-Fashion Photographer
By Michelle Smith

A career in fashion photography sounds like a dream job. But as with most dreams, there are dues to pay. A fashion photography career is not one to pursue if you are only slightly interested in the industry. Fashion photography is a goal-driven industry that does not accommodate casual attitudes. To be successful, a person must have savvy a combination of technical skill, creativity and contacts.

Fashion-Photography Basics

Part of the illusion of fashion photography is that it is a job all about fun. New York photographer Megan Garcia quickly dispels that misconception saying fashion is serious. The fashion photographer has a job that many outsiders don’t consider— sales.

Fashion photographers are not commissioned to take pictures for the sake of art or creativity. Fashion photography is a promotion tactic. Anyone who pursues this career should be prepared to withstand pressure to produce images that compel viewers to buy something, whether it is a dress or a magazine showcasing a dress.

This requires more than just an eye for clothes and accessories; this kind of photographer must also have an eye for people. To convey a message or cast a style a certain way, a fashion photographer must have creative vision and knowledge of how to pose models and props.

And taking pictures is not the only job responsibility. Fashion photographers find locations where their photo shoots will take place and hire models that fit into the vision. They take pictures that not only sell fashion but communicate the client’s image or season that a garment is suggested to be worn.

Social and interpersonal people skills are a must. Fashion photography, even in a freelance capacity is far from being a solitary profession. Not only does it deal with fussy clients and models, but it also deals with art and photo directors, editors and support staff.

Becoming a Fashion Photographer

Competition in the world of fashion photography is a major challenge. Anyone considering this career path should know there are more offers than opportunities.

Oftentimes those considering a fashion photography career consider getting a degree in photography or fashion photography. This can be helpful, but it is not necessary. With the help of digital technology, many of the jobs go to talent over schooling.

Garcia only recommends formal education if it is a strategy to secure contacts. “Depressing the shutter at 125th of a second doesn’t take long to learn,” she says.

An education will definitely strengthen technical skills, but alone it will not do much to get a fashion photography career off the ground. And no matter how prominent the school a person attends, or how much money she invests in her education, she is still likely to work in lower positions such as photography assistant or even secretary before getting noticed.

Fashion photography is a business where contacts are a matter of life or death. Garcia says the best way to break into the business is to make coffee for someone who knows someone.

It’s true that a formal education is not required to be a successful photographer, but that does not mean just anyone can develop a fashion photography career. Garcia says that developing your taste in fashion can take a lifetime.

A perspective fashion photographer needs exposure to various aspects of the fashion industry. She needs to cloak herself in the business, associating with designers, models and art directors. She needs to study magazines and fashion shows.

Self-promotion and networking are also dire matters. At the beginning of a fashion photography career, the new photographer is not likely to have a reputation. She must therefore strive to connect with people. However, the most important marketing tool is going to be her portfolio, since many potential clients will not be meeting face to face.

A portfolio is essential but will prove useless or even detrimental if it is poorly assembled. Whatever style a fashion photographer wants to portray—whether dark and moody or effervescent, California sunshine—resist the temptation to be everything to everybody. Picking a niche can help define your talent, at least to start.

To increase the chances of getting a commission, a fashion photographer should research and know her client’s needs as much as possible before submitting her portfolio. It is not advisable to expect a portfolio to be a one-size-fits-all resource. It will likely have to be modified, even if only slightly, for various perspective clients.

Assembling the Portfolio

The display of creativity begins with the portfolio. This is the fashion photographer’s opportunity to impart a memorable impression, so it must get the perspective client’s attention, hold her attention and compel her to write a contact. As previously stated, fashion photography is competitive, so if the portfolio isn’t brilliant, the career will stall. If a fashion photographer cannot sell herself to her potential client, the client is not likely to believe that the fashion photographer will be able to sell anything else.

Anyone who wants to move through the ranks of the fashion photography world should pay explicit detail to her development. Instead of trying to fly to the top, an aspiring fashion photographer should humbly accept positions where she can learn, such as being an assistant. Assisting can be as beneficial to the assistant as it is to the professional needing assistance. Plus, there may be odd jobs available that help build a portfolio.

Being exposed to a senior professional allows a new professional an up-close view of the inner workings of the industry, allows her to meet important contacts and gives her insight to avoid beginner’s mistakes.

Career Advancement

For many photographers, high-fashion photography is the ultimate goal. Everything that is required in fashion photography, from networking to creativity is required to a higher degree in this stratosphere.

Entrance into the world of high-fashion photography is granted only after the fashion photographer has developed an eminent reputation and skill set. Whereas other fashion photographers tend to work with a team, the high-fashion photographer is the head of the team. She is usually responsible for hiring and organizing everyone from models to scene painters.

High-fashion photography is limited to the most ambitious, motivated, dedicated and talented fashion photographers. It is unrealistic to expect to begin a career in the world of high-fashion photography.

The Full Package

A photographer can have the best education, the best equipment and even top-notch connections, but a fashion photography career is dependant upon a full package. A talented photographer who is creative, artistic and has technical skill to bring her ideas to life faces the possibility of a lucrative, high-energy career in fashion photography.

So you want to be a Model? - Tip's from a Photographer’s perspective

So you’re a model. You’ve been told all your life that you are beautiful and that you should be a model. You should have all these photographers waiting in line just to work with you. Why haven’t you done a single photoshoot with anyone ? What is wrong with this picture ?

How do you find these photographers ?

One of the first places to look is websites such as MySpace which has revolutionized the web and made social networking what it is today. Most photographers have a MySpace page to showcase their works. It’s a great marketing tools for photographers and models. MySpace can reach a lot of people. I am not going to go on about it anymore. For this discussion, I will talk about how to approach photographers.

You’ve found a photographer in your area that you want to work with. You like his / her work. It is something you want to be involved with. How do you ask this person to ?

One of the first term you want to know is TFP/CD. Time for Prints or Time for CD. What this mean is that you’re trading your time or the photographer’s time for the cd of images. This could be just a simple test shoot.

Make sure you have a couple of headshots readily available. A pet peeve of mine is when models send me cameraphone pictures or pictures of them in front of the mirror with a digital camera. If you want us to consider you, make sure you do not send these photos. It is not professional. You are just starting out. One of the first thing is make a good first impression. Sending a camera phone photo is not what I call making a good impression. You are making an impression alright, but that’s not the impression that I am looking for.

We want to see just a simple headshot. It doesn’t have to be a professional one. It just have to be clear. We want to see who we’re working with here.

When sending an email, just introduce yourself. We want real names. Don’t use nicknames or screennames. We don’t care. We want to work with a real person and not a figment of your imagination.

Don’t be pushy. Sometimes photographers are busy. If you catch me on a good day, you will get a reply within 15 seconds. We do have other things going on. If you don’t get a reply in a timely manner, just be patient. Wait a few days and then try again.

Be polite in your emails. This all goes with making a good first impression. It is still very important in anything you do.

You might have what it takes to be the next America’s Top Model. Don’t act like one. We’ve seen it all before. It’s nothing new to us. Don’t act like a diva. We don’t like working with divas.

So you’ve had email interactions with the photographer. The next step is to meet up with the photographer to discuss a shoot. I have a studio right downtown where I live. I would never meet with a model at my studio. I want to meet them in a public place. My studio is about 20 feet away from a coffee shop. I like to meet the models there. For security and other reasons, I don’t like models to see my studio until I schedule a shoot with them. I don’t want models to think that I already agree to work with them. It’s just a casual meeting with coffee and nothing more. If the meeting went well and I am interested in working with the model, I will then discuss whether this is going to be either a Paid shoot or just a TFP session. We also discuss wardrobe and makeups at this point. I don’t want any misunderstandings whatsoever. If we both agree to the term of the shoots, then we can proceed with the schedule.

Now that you’ve scheduled a photoshoot with a photographer, what should you do next ?

Your looks are your biggest assets. Take care of it. It is OK to go out with your girls once in a while. Everyone entitled to their personal and social life. Don’t let it hinder your professional life.

Don’t go out to the clubs the night before the shoot. Don’t expect that a night of drinking and dancing isn’t going to affect your performance in front of the camera. If it is more important for you to go out with your girls than take care of yourself for a photoshoot, then you are in the wrong industry. There are a certain place and time for clubbing, but the night before a photoshoot is not one of them. You can do whatever you want to do. Just wait till after the shoot. We don’t like to edit the bags under your eyes. If the photos came out bad because the exposure wasn’t up to par or it is out of focus, then it is the fault of the photographer. If the photos came out bad because of the bags under your eyes, then it is on you. You have no one but yourself to blame for that.

This will probably be your last time you end up working with me if this happened. I don’t have time to waste on models who lack determinations.

Don’t be late. Photographers sometime will give you a grace period. 10-15 minutes late due to traffic is OK. If you show up an hour late, you might as well just stay in for the rest of the day. Don’t even bother calling with your explanations. There is no reason for anybody to be an hour late to a shoot. Don’t tell me that you have to do your makeups and hair. I don’t want to hear about your excuses. You are booked on a certain schedule. You must commit to it. If you don’t want to be an hour late, make sure you get things done an hour early. Sometimes it’s not just one person waiting for you. The photographer, the make up artist, the hair stylist, the designer, the wardrobe stylist, the art director, I could go on and on. Your job is to be there on time and you failed it. Remember what I said about making a good impression ? Show up early on a photoshoot. Show up 30 minutes early to the studio. I bet you that the photographer will appreciate seeing you there.

I don’t know how many time I’m going to say this and I am going to do it again. If you must bring an escort, make sure to tell the escort to not be a distraction. Most photographers, including myself do not like models to bring their escorts to a shoot. Sometimes the escort can be a nuisance. I can write about the escort in a story in itself. Maybe in the near future. Give your escort the photographer’s cell phone. Make sure he’s near by in case something happen. He can be within reach.

Be willing to follow directions when you’re in front of the camera. We don’t expect you to know all the good poses. We expect that you let us tell you what to do. It is our job behind the camera.

Leave your personal problems at home. We all have bad days. Don’t let it ruin your photoshoot. Leave it at the door. If you can’t leave it behind, cancel the shoot. Give the photographer a reasonable about of time so he can find a replacement. Don’t bring your dirty laundry to the shoot. It will show up in the final image.

I know I said more than a mouthful. These are some tips I hope to help a model who wants to get into the industry. There are plenty of people that you can impress. If I had a great experience working with a model, I will tell other photographers that I know about her. If you impress the designers, they will include you in their next show.

There is a lot of networking involved in this business. People will forget what good thing you did, but they remember the bad thing you did. Keep that in mind.
